The choice between mains or low voltage track lighting is more of a personal preference now days. At one time the new style small 50mm halogen bulbs where not available in mains voltage so the choice was to go for low voltage. Technology has now moved on and with the introduction of the 50mm GU10 bulbs you can have all the advantage of a small unobtrusive spotlight and bulb in a mains version. The mains versions do tend to be less expensive as they don’t require a transformer, It is also the case that the mains version are dimmable which is not he case with all low voltage fittings. Low voltage track spot require a transformer and many of them now have these built into the fitting itself. There are sometimes areas that you may wish to use track lighting such as a swimming pool area when you will need to use low voltage versions. The wire type lighting kits are also low voltage due to their design with the transformer being mounted separately.
